Install Witness
Run from npm
Section titled “Run from npm”No install step. This rewrites your MCP config to route through Witness and keeps a backup:
npx @darkvectorcognition.ai/witness wrap --as you@company
--as sets the principal label written into each record. wrap finds project .mcp.json, ~/.claude.json, Cursor’s mcp.json and Claude Desktop’s config. It is reversible and safe to run twice. To see the dry-run and undo options:
npx @darkvectorcognition.ai/witness --help
Run from a clone
Section titled “Run from a clone”Witness needs Node.js 22.13 or later and has no build step:
git clone https://github.com/dark-vector-cognition/witness
cd witness
node bin/witness.mjs --help
npm test
Where the records go
Section titled “Where the records go”Records are written to ~/.witness/log/<session>.jsonl. Set WITNESS_HOME to move them.
Read the records
Section titled “Read the records”npx @darkvectorcognition.ai/witness tail # live: each tool call, its outcome and latency
npx @darkvectorcognition.ai/witness report # a Markdown digest of the last 7 days
sessions, query and anchor are also available; run --help for their options.
After you wrap, restart the MCP client and make one tool call. If tail shows nothing, the client is not using the wrapped config.
